Biden went to the Capitol building on January 6, the first anniversary of the riot there by Trump supporters. Biden said, “[D]emocracy was attacked…. The will of the people was under assault. The Constitution, our constitution, faced the gravest of threats.”

But what is “democracy” in the U.S.?  Lately it seems like voting rights that can be given by Congress, can later be taken away by the Supreme Court and state governments, especially for People of Color.  It also includes record military spending to deny people around the world their rights by the use of military force. And that spending goes on while this government, led by Biden, can’t seem to find the resources to get people the COVID tests and medical equipment we need. The list goes on and on.

And Biden made this speech about defending democracy in the Capitol, a building constructed using slave labor over 200 years ago. And he talks about defending the Constitution, which was written by slave-owners.  And the Capitol itself is the meeting place of Congress, a majority of whose members are millionaires. They don’t represent the 99 Percent.

How dare Biden talk about defending democracy in a place like that? Obviously Trump doesn’t represent us, but neither does Biden.
