France: Little Confidence in the Government

Date:

Le Monde (the world), a French newspaper, reported on two recent polls of the French population. The polls showed that nearly two in three French people think that the government is lying to them about the management of the epidemic: 63% believe that the government is “hiding things”, 70% think that the government “does not tell the truth to the French people.”

Confidence in what politicians say was already low at the start of the current government’s five-year term. It declined even further during the “yellow vests” movement. This was a popular grassroots protest movement for economic justice that began in France in October 2018 and continued with weekly demonstrations in Paris and around the country for over a year.

Confidence in the French government has continued to decline — and for good reason!
