Democrats Hate Dark Money, Until Dark Money Loves Democrats

Politics today is full of dark money, or money that is not traceable to a particular donor. For years, Democrats have pointed out that millions of dollars have gone to Republican candidates from Dark Money. It’s true! Donald Trump received $22 million in Dark Money during his 2016 presidential campaign.

But wait, this time around the shoe is on the other foot. The Biden campaign received $320 million in dark money to help his campaign! Even though the Democrats have criticized dark money for years, this time around they are taking ten times as much as the Republicans.

Why is the dark money going to Biden this time? We can’t read the minds of the rich donors. Especially since we don’t know who they are!

But you can imagine – after making billions in profits and benefiting from over a trillion dollars in tax cuts during the Trump years, the wealthy are looking for a steadier hand on the wheel to navigate the pandemic and the economic crisis their system is struggling to handle.

What’s the lesson in all this? The rich control this so-called democracy and all you have to do is follow the money. Dark money is just one of many ways they try to hide who really controls this system. Maybe the Democrats will pass a law to limit this kind of hidden donation, but then the rich will simply find another way to leverage their power. Dark money is only the tip of the iceberg. If we want a real democracy that actually represents the interests of working people, it’s time to rip up their system at the roots and start from scratch!
