On Thursday, June 18 The Supreme Court voted 5-4 to overturn Trump’s plan to end DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals), an executive order by the Obama Administration that has allowed 650,000 immigrants who came to the United States as children to stay here. If the Court had voted the other way, these people, who have been raised in this culture and society their whole lives, would have faced immediate deportation.
This continuation of DACA is great news for these young people and their families, as well as for all of us, who have everything to gain from living in a world where all people having the right to live freely where they choose.
At the same time let’s keep in mind that it wasn’t Trump’s inhumane plan that the Supreme Court opposed. It was the way he tried to do it. The Court ruled that the White House didn’t provide sufficient justification for deporting all these people. If he had given what they consider legally sufficient reasons, the Court would have supported him.
Sometimes the Court appears as heroic; sometimes it appears as a villain. And, as in this case, it sometimes does the right thing for the wrong reasons. We can’t wait and leave our fate to nine judges or to the politicians to pass a new law. As we have seen in the last three weeks, when millions of people go out in the streets to show their anger and determination day after day, many things can change and change very quickly! In fact, it is perhaps this anger in the streets right now that made the courts choose to not add fuel to the fire, by proposing to deport 650,000 young people from the place they call home.
