On February 2, multinational oil giants ExxonMobil and Chevron both announced paying out record amounts to shareholders in 2023, indicating that both were extremely profitable. Even worse, both also announced that they had produced record amounts of gas in a single year!

This news comes only shortly after numerous studies confirmed that 2023 was also the hottest year since at least 1850, and likely the hottest year in at least the last 100,000 years.

This is no coincidence. The profitable production and use of fossil fuels is literally baking our planet. Their use is threatening the habitats of millions of non-human animals and plants, and the delicate natural habitat that has allowed us – humans – to develop and live here on earth.

Everybody knows or should know that we must stop using fossil fuels now. So why don’t they stop? Don’t they know what they’re doing?

They know exactly what they are doing. They are relentlessly pursuing profit, as all capitalists and their corporations do every single day. If they don’t produce, they will lose profit, lose market share, and get wiped out by their competitors. They are stuck in a system that forces them to keep producing. If this system continues, it will blast ahead until they have destroyed the planet. It will not stop, no matter the consequences.

We have a stark choice: either rid ourselves of this system, or allow it to totally destroy our habitat here on earth. At this point, revolution is self-defense.
